Kaba Bar

The Kaba bar is the one strip of interface Kaba keeps on screen: a slim header across the top of the window. Everything in it is either a live readout or a button that opens something on demand.

[todo: add screenshot of the Kaba bar and of parts the frame strip, the site pill, System Performance, Search, Downloads, Audio, Frames, Avatar.]

  • network activity upload / download
  • cpu usage
  • memory usage

A small live chart sits beside the numbers. Set how often it samples under Settings → System monitor refresh interval; lower intervals are more responsive and use a little more CPU. Choosing Off hides the readout and stops polling.

The omnibar icon opens the omnibar: type an address, a search, or a /command. The same thing happens with Ctrl+Space or Ctrl/Cmd+L.

In the centre of the bar is the site pill, showing the page in the active pane. Click it for the site panel.

The pill showsMeaning
The site’s own iconA normal website.
The Kaba markA built-in kaba:// page.
A green check badgeHTTPS with no insecure content.
A warning badgePlain HTTP, a certificate problem, or insecure content.

Right-click the pill for Cut, Copy, Paste and Paste and Go (or Paste and Search when the clipboard is not a URL).

  • View current download progress
  • View past downloads

The badge counts downloads. In the panel you can pause, resume or cancel an active download, and for finished ones Show in Files (Kaba’s file explorer), Show in System, or remove it from the list. Clear Completed tidies up. By default the panel opens when a download starts.

Where files are saved, and whether Kaba asks each time, is set under Settings → Downloads.

Appears when something is playing, with a count of active players. Open it to control playback without hunting for the pane that is making the noise. It also picks up media players elsewhere on your machine.

[todo: add screenshot of the Audio panel and of parts the player list, play/pause, volume, the source pane.]

  • Add new pane
  • Add new frame
  • Save current frame
  • Rebalance current frame
  • View all

The badge is the number of open frames. See UI layout.

Your avatar. Click it for the Kaba menu:

  • Restart to update Kaba (when an update is ready)
  • Projects, Terminal, File Manager
  • Saves, Discovery, Hippocampus
  • Downloads
  • Disable / Enable Blocker
  • Sites, Settings
  • Exit Kaba

Each item is described under UI layout. See also accounts.

Click the site pill to open the panel. This is where you make exceptions for one site without loosening anything globally. It has three tabs.

[todo: add screenshot of the site panel and of parts General tab, Permissions tab, Memory Visualization tab.]

Identity and connection details for the page, then Privacy for this site:

SwitchEffect for this site
LockdownNo JavaScript, uniform identity, no WebRTC, sensor requests denied. A second switch applies it to this pane only.
Third-party cookiesAllow cross-site cookies here.
Fingerprint protectionTurn randomization off, so the site sees the browser exactly as it is. A second switch applies to this pane only.
Ad blockingTurn the blocker off or on here.

Each row shows whether it is following the global default or has been overridden, with a reset link to go back. Changes that only apply to a freshly loaded page show a prompt: Reload now, or Later.

If a site keeps serving “verify you are human” checks, the panel says so and explains that fingerprint protection has been paused for it. If checks continue even while paused, turn fingerprint protection off for that site with the switch.

Below the switches:

ButtonDoes
Copy URLCopies the page address.
Hard ReloadReloads the page, bypassing the cache.
Clear CacheRemoves all stored data for this site (cookies, storage, service workers, caches) and reloads.
Clear App CacheFor kaba:// pages: clears cached app code and reloads. Your projects and data are untouched.
ForgetClears the site’s data, permissions and overrides in one step. Click twice to confirm.

On a page that is not secure, the panel warns you not to enter passwords or card numbers.

[todo: add screenshot of the General tab and of parts Lockdown switch, per-pane switch, third-party cookies, fingerprint protection, ad blocking, Reload/Later prompt, Forget.]

Lists the capabilities this site has asked for, with Allow, Deny or Default (ask) for each. All permissions shows the full catalogue with a filter box, so you can decide ahead of a prompt.

Capabilities include camera and microphone, location, notifications, MIDI, USB, serial, HID, Bluetooth, fullscreen, pointer lock, downloads and opening external apps.

[todo: add screenshot of the Permissions tab and of parts a requested permission with Allow/Deny/Default, the All permissions list, the filter box.]

Shows the memory Kaba holds for this page. From here you can update the memory or open it in Hippocampus.

[todo: add screenshot of the Memory Visualization tab and of parts the memory view, Update Memory, open in Hippocampus.]

Focus mode removes the Kaba bar; so does full screen. With the i3-style compact header the bar shrinks to a slim strip of workspace squares. See compact layouts.
