Settings

Curt and Trish from corporate IT live here.

Settings is a built-in app at kaba://settings/. Open it from your avatar’s menu, with /s or /settings in the omnibar, or with Ctrl+, (Cmd+, on macOS).

The sidebar lists the pages below. Search at the top (Ctrl+F or /) finds any setting by name or keyword, for example cookies, i3 or DNS, and jumps to it.

[todo: add screenshot of Settings and of parts the sidebar, the search palette with results, the General page.]

Most changes apply immediately and show a Setting updated notice. A few apply only to pages loaded afterwards; those say so.

Your avatar, name and email, Edit Account (name and password) and Logout. See accounts.

Check for updates, opt in to beta releases, and choose whether to check automatically. Automatic checking is off by default. On a fleet-managed device, updates are pushed centrally. When an update has downloaded, Restart now installs it.

Automatic updates are available on production builds. If you built Kaba from source, update by rebuilding.

Frees memory from panes you are not using. A frozen pane reloads when you click it.

SettingDefault
Enable Memory Saveron
Never Freeze Active Frameson. Keeps every pane in the visible frame alive, not just the active one.

Idle timeout10 minutes. Options from 2 minutes to 1 hour.
Always Keep ActiveA list of domains that are never frozen. Add one from a pane’s status-bar menu.

The visual theme for Kaba. Smart Theme Change switches between a day theme and a night theme, by custom times or by sunrise and sunset. In kaba 0.146 this is on the Look & Feel page.

Font size, scrollback, GPU acceleration, background transparency and colour theme, with the option to have the terminal follow the system theme. See terminal. Whether the terminal is available, and how it routes, is under Security & Privacy.

Your desktop wallpaper: pick an image, upload your own, or use a solid colour.

The search engines the omnibar can use, and which is the default. Add your own with a name and a query URL. See omnibar.

The filter lists the in-browser blocker uses: enable, add or remove them. The global on/off switch is Disable Blocker in your avatar’s menu; per-site and per-pane switches are in the Kaba bar and the pane menu. In kaba 0.146 the lists are on the Security & Privacy page.

Bring bookmarks, history and passwords from Chrome, Chromium, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera or Firefox. See accounts.

SettingDefaultWhat it controls
Enable AIoffThe on-device model features: context-menu text actions (Analysis, Format, Question, Respond, Debug, Convert), the toasts they open, Projects, Toolbench, and the Policies and Models pages. When off, the model worker never starts and those menus are hidden.
Enable MemoryonSaving pages to your local memory store, both manually and automatically as you browse. When off, the memory menu items are hidden, nothing is captured, and the Memories and Extraction views are removed from Hippocampus.
Remember terminal sessionsSave each terminal session as a searchable memory. See what is kept out.
Remember file activitySave what you do in the file explorer as a searchable memory.
Enable Learning DataRecord how you use the browser (navigation chains, searches, form inputs other than passwords and payment fields, and assistant task steps) so your on-device model can learn from your usage. Stored locally and encrypted with your memories; always off when Memory is off; never records Ghost sessions.

Two related controls sit here: Remove a password or other text from memory, and Delete all learning data.

[todo: add screenshot of the Features section and of parts Enable AI, Enable Memory, Remember terminal sessions, Remember file activity, Enable Learning Data, Delete all learning data.]

Pages and domains in this list are skipped by automatic memory capture and excluded from training. Add one from the status-bar menu of a page in the Memories view: Ignore this domain or Ignore this page. A domain rule also covers its subdomains. Remove entries here.

SettingDefault

Every shortcut, with a filter box. Click one and press new keys to rebind it; a marker shows chords that are shared. Reset all restores the defaults. This page also sets what Mod+Enter opens: a new desktop, a new terminal, or a custom address. See keyboard shortcuts.

Everything in Kaba (kaba and kabactl) can be policy driven. Every UI element, every backend service, and everything in between. Out of the box in the UI we expose the ability to create a new policy for which models you want running as defaults in Kaba. For example, you could have a “low resources” policy for machines and systems that lack compute power or memory and automatically load models that can operate within those constraints.

But under the hood, everything is configurable in this manner. The upshot here is that for enterprise, corporate, or high stakes environments, policy can now be enforced in real-time given any arbitrary input (e.g. line of business, role based access, system info, etc.).

  • Main LLM
  • Policy allowed models & selections
  • ad block
  • Default search engines
  • Enforced themes & branding
  • Proxy & Comms
  • Local vs Remote

Shown when AI is enabled. In Kaba Personal you create, edit, import and export policies here. On a fleet-managed device, policies are pushed to your group centrally and you cannot loosen them. What a policy can set today is listed under machine learning.

Welcome to your intelligent cluster. Create a ticket, paste it into another device running Kaba, and now you have your own p2p cluster.

Out of the box Settings contains simple information like

  • System info
  • System id

Once you add devices to your cluster, a new world opens up. No more walking around with open laptops, no more managing ssh to access boxes and data elsewhere.

Click the breadcrumbs next to a device and you can access that system’s terminal, filesystem, sync data to it, or even use it as an exit node.

Much more to come here. Watch this space.

In Kaba Personal you add and remove devices yourself. Under fleet management, enrolment, grouping and removal are central.

The same menu starts training or memory enrichment on a device, and its row shows progress with Pause, Resume and Stop. The table lists each device’s status, role, node ID and last-seen time. See cluster & mesh.

[todo: add screenshot of Devices and of parts Invite a device, Join a cluster, the device table, the breadcrumbs menu (terminal, filesystem, sync, exit node, train).]

The base images and running containers of the tool sandbox, on this device or a peer.

  • Running containers: session, image, status and current step, with Stop and Delete.
  • Base images: import any image by reference, for example docker.io/library/alpine:3.20. Each shows its languages, size and whether it is cached. Terminal opens a shell inside an image.

[todo: add screenshot of Containers and of parts Manage on (device picker), Running containers, Base images with Import, the Terminal button.]

Out of the box, we ship logs for your viewing pleasure. We included some basic manipulation (types of logs to include) and the ability to pause them.

In the sidebar this page is System Logs. It is the client’s log, live; the engine’s log is kabactl-server.log on disk.

All of the basics for your Kaba system live here, like version and user data. Additionally, Kaba gives you some diagnostics (Processes and WebContents by default). You can copy the JSON or grab a Heap Snapshot to do other fun things.

SectionShows
About KabaVersions of Kaba, Electron, Chromium and Node, and the user data path.
DiagnosticsTotal memory, the main process heap, the engine’s memory, per-process figures, and uptime. Copy JSON copies it all for a bug report.
ProcessesEach process by memory, with the page it belongs to.
TroubleshootProbe a page that will not load: Kaba runs the load step by step through your own session and gives a verdict. Reset Kaba Chrome Settings clears engine caches and developer-tools state and restarts; your data, logins and preferences are not affected.
